RuneScape Private Servers
RuneScape Private Server, commonly abbreviated "RSPS", is an unofficial RuneScape server not created by Jagex. Original and modified RuneScape clients can connect to.
RSPS and RuneScape cheating has been an ongoing and growing niche that really gained momentum around 2005. There are many different types of private servers, of which most are based on revision #317 of the RuneScape client with new official features being reverse-engineered and added to the client along with custom content that does not exist in RuneScape.
Popular servers can be often found running several worlds with thousands of players each at any given time. Typical server populations range from 100 to 700 players, however.
Who is RSPS for?
Players of RuneScape private servers are often seeking a break from the normal experience of official RuneScape. Players of private servers often simultaneously subscribe to and play official RuneScape and use RSPS for entertainment as well as to test different combinations of play styles and methods quickly, without risking their official progress.
RSPS is specifically great at introducing players who have overlapping interests in game design and programming a platform to learn skill sets which allow them to modify the client and server to add their own features or fix their own bugs. If you want to learn how to program, make a video game, manage websites or run servers, learning about RuneScape and getting involved in RSPS is a great way to do all of it (and more) at once.
There are several examples of people who got their start in the community and made meaningful, life-changing careers in technology due to the unique complexity of even getting into RSPS. This should be accessible for others, and some people in the community have even earned gainful employment at Jagex. After all, them and their legal team are always watching!
How to Contribute
Over a decade has past since the term RSPS was coined, yet despite numerous attempts, still no quality and consolidated informational resource on the subject exists. There is such breadth and depth that it requires a curated approach to organizing and creating meaningful learning resources for people interested in learning about the amazing work Jagex has done.
The purpose of this website is to consolidate everything learned over 15 years, documenting and preserving the history of these communities and the amount of knowledge gained through understanding what limited information given to the community. Content written for this wiki will focus on the positive outcomes and understandings rather than social or political drama within the semi-anonymous and ephemeral RSPS "scene."
A wiki can be managed using source control, versioning can be implemented, as well as content be incrementally audited and improved. The wiki is currently working on the first round draft of documentation as a starting point to establish a version 1, so please check back periodically and submit feedback on what you want documented. Potentially, after v1 is done, the private GitHub repo may be opened up for outside contributions.
